Marek Szostaczko's latest text about art movement around at Hackney Wick exhibitions and studio shows.

I know, it is time for all. I worked mostly in my studio at my latest pieces. This was very intensive, my life was controlled by my visionary world. Later this summer I came down to be around with people. It is all about to take some time off to walk and talk with some people you know, friends and others, that can take you to understand you better.
Summer can change all. I have two weeks brake and come back to London for Hackney Wick Art Exhibitions. It is a very useful time and I am overtaken by feelings and energy as I rotated around people, new and some that I know for years. The time was there to be around art studios in Hackney, and to street walk throughout.

News: Painting for Agressiva69 album cover "Deus ex machine" 2007 was stolen from group leader, the vocalist during photography work at this painting. The photographies of the same were used for the album cover.
Album was released in 2007 but painting got missing for one year.
Police is involved in the search process, with slight incompetency though.

The "Light Man" title "The first dream", illustrated novel was copyrighted in 2007. All copyrights reserved for the idea, story, screen adaptation and name to Marek Szostaczko.

The "Light Man" adaptation is based on artist sketches that naturally came to life during several and long artistic improvements and repeated alteration. The momentary outcome is now an exhibition that presents excellent accomplishment of artist skills in a series of large scale oil paintings.
The paintings are mirror images from the sketch book drawings, mastered and converted into the new, richer form.

Mythological symbols represent old spiritual dogmas: the god, the light, within suns
and planets, floating amongst the angel’s.

Start from very early stage of this work, the moment of the first appearance of the idea to create "Light Man" image:

From the first sketch, and over those following I raised in my imagination a for me interesting visionary wave that created image and story line. This wave was filled with the shape of image structure. But it was during sketching those images, that the story came truly to live as a real connected story line over the pages.

The accomplishment of several illustrations was an important moment to check the story development regarding the overall narrative, connections of images, value and ideology. After 3 moths from first sketch I end up with 45 sketches of the story line ready for next stage of development.

Soon after this first draft the new idea to enlarge these images and paint them on canvas came to me. I chose the most expressive sketches for the first attempt to paint from sketch.

I constantly recorded the process with a camera which is the connecting medium for my entire work. With the help of the clips I am able to look at progress and appearance of the outcome in order to master important details in the painted images. It is fascinating to look how the paintings grew from white and dusky empty surface, through layers of colours and shape covering the canvas into their final complex structure, slowly representing entire "Light Man" story. When I play the recorded clips fast forward I am nicely surprised by the development of the narration of the image.

These paintings are created on a special photographic base, this is a special process which increases the value of the image by adding more intensive contrast, layers of motion and light to give energy and great tones to the painted surface.

Very complex paintings came to life during this development. It took me almost one year of painting passionately. The first show of these paintings was in Kingsgate Gallery in June. The exhibition consisted of nine pieces and several drawings, also displayed was the first draft of the "Light Man" story and its illustration book.

Since this first "Light Man" exhibition in the Kingsland Road Gallery I am coming back to some of these pieces to make some renewals mostly touches to increase their quality.

Idea for the "Light Man" story and philosophy of the created images.

The title refers to the birth of a new hero. He is a new character with symbols related to spiritual visions. The story is connected to mythology and to existing science–fiction illustrated novels. The character and story are totally fictional.

The images of this story were hidden somewhere in my imagination of a different world, that were to be awaken during intensive sketching. I myself followed the story steps. I let the image and character grow by gathering elements of illustrative identity referring to sense and situations that had to be involved in this story. Images were created in the exact moment of pencil being placed on the paper. I was driven by artistic forces.

This work is partly religious. I created a visionary language that corresponds with the viewer's cultural aspects rather then being motivated by action and violence.

The motive to give this story to the audience is my exploration of human kind in the world and the constantly increasing speed in our evolution/development, especially in cities. The narrative of the "Light Man" book answers the rough and brutal reality with peace and spiritual harmony. My point of view is to look at the life from inside ourselves and to slow down all this speed of surrounding technical evolution.

Another reason is the exploration of the soul or spirit of the human being, the try to separate the soul and awake our conciousness by meditation or dream. If an underworld or a metaphysical world really exists, it will become an intriguing part for our life.

The Auschwitz Museum

Oświęcim (Auschwitz) is the city where in its suburb "Nazi" Germany built the biggest concentration camp in Europe during the Second World War.

April 1940: first prisoner’s arrival. Polish politicians were the first prisoners entering the gate of the Auschwitz concentration camp.
Soon after, other deports followed from the south and east borders, these are first deports of Jewish people living in Poland and from surrounded countries, such as Czech Republic, Bulgarian, Rumania and Yugoslavia.

With the expanding of the German army in Europe other places got involved in the ethnic clearance. Most of the Jewish prisoners of all European nations were sooner or later loaded in to train carriages to be transported from transit camps to the main prison of Auschwitz. Nations send to Auschwitz prison also from Holland, Italia, Switzerland, Norway, Austria and Britain. The people were transported in overcrowded carriages, without water and food. Some people never reached their cruel destination.

Increasing numbers of human arrivals to the prison was followed by the increasing number of blocks and barracks being built. Construction work was done by the prisoners under humiliating circumstances and under extreme exhaustion. The daily routine of heavy work extended the prison area into a massive territory of connected camps and buildings. Separated were young children’s and pregnant women from males from females from disabled people. Within four years the SS (Staatssicherheit) created Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II-Birkenau, and Auschwitz III-Monowitz with other 40 sub-camps.

Prisoners arrested for live were photographed and marked with tattooed numbers.
With the moment of entering the Auschwitz camp each prisoner was robbed all belongings, money, clothes buts and luggage. Their heads were shaved, and they were dressed in specially designed prison uniform.

Condition of the Auschwitz prison was extremely bad. In some parts of the prison camps no water system existed, hence hygienic conditions were very bad. A separated area was created for the human waist in some locations, in which each prisoner could spend roughly 10 second a day.

Clothes were not designed for cold or hot days. With daily very hard work and poor nourishment of only 1300 to 1700 calories a day of rotten vegetable and 300 grams of bread the surviving of this tragedy was nearly impossible.

Heavy labour and constant hunger were reasons for physical breakdowns as a topical scenario of all concentration camps.
The prisoners lives were under constant threat. For the slightest disobedience the SS- army applied penalties on prisoners. To punish prisoners any thing could be reason.
Nights were broken by fired guns, and noise of pain and fear. Some prisoners couldn't take these extreme moments and threw themselves in to electric wires that surrounded their prison.

Most important for the late punishment of criminal activities by the SS inside concentration camp are photographs that were hidden and rarely smuggled by prisoners during time of German occupancy.

The inmates managing such incredible acts of saving these evidences whilst being so close to terror of the SS soldiers was very brave and became crucial for image archives of crime and terror.

Later during the war when German Army lost the east front with the Soviet army the order to destroy all evidences of the Auschwitz concentration camp came rapidly.

Paintings together with illustrated artist book created by technologies related to light are the next projects. Elements of these two projects coordinate very well with each other.
Painting represents sketched images, to consider details of these paintings were not an exactly are mirror reflection of first created sketches.

With my vision were formed and sketched exactly, but during the paining expansion on the canvas surface image transform in to own different complex form. Paintings enlarge in shape, applying with great care colour within modern contrast and tone, diffuse with image sensitivity. Those paintings earn own gravity and flow within own illusion with no boundaries.
These paintings are complex.

Canvas surface, oil, brush strokes, paint, wood frame, liquid light are the main components for the entire outcome.

The Light Man is the main theme of this exhibition, idea for the story was base on cultural diversity and historical artistic movement.
Combining a historical-cultural perspective with a social scene and cultural approach, the dual project aims to innovates the role of the book story, within paintings and music appearance in everyday cultural practice.

Stoke Newington Gallery

Outcome was strongly emotional as it connects with my story of the "Lightman". Exhibitions over two weeks in Kings Road Gallery and one week in Stoke Newington Gallery.

The latest exhibition in December last year in the Stoke Newington Gallery was very successful. The atmosphere was warming up by a befriended musician, Andrew Crayford with his band "the Kosmos" playing for the opening and during the weekend.

Idea for the ,,Lightman’’ story and philosophy behind this created images.

Main image and title are referring to the basically new character "Lightman".
The Lightman story is totally fictional therefore narrative creation is illusionary, story is adequate to illustrative stories and their hero episodes from the past. This story therefore is taken from myths or knowledge in novels by simple expression of image flow and my experience in art.
Images of those stories were hidden some where in my conciousness to be awakened during intensive progress of sketch book development.
Fallow the ideas and main reason to create main character the hero of this story, is to come to world with new superhero Lightman the one how deliver new light and knowledge. The image is created with attention to details and nicely evaluate in to the story line with first identity and characteristics.
Images are not easy option to create from memory or thinking, one option and most vital one was to directly fallow the story steps and let the image and character grown and evaluate in to the needs of the connected narrative with spontaneity and feelings to the epic. Referring to the sense and situations involve story is great in given future prospect.
